Flame awarded title having won all four events they attended

Event 5 - Sunday 26 March 2006

The final event of the Indoor League saw us losing three of the top teams - Playthings, ABH and Angels all unable to put out a team. That left us with Angels, Lurve, Thrown and UCL in the Premiership and Curve, Swerve, HCUK and PAF in the Championship. Not to mention 30 minute games!

The game of the day was undoubtedly Swerve vs HCUK. A nail biter that took the full 30 minutes and saw the teams finishd at 11 all. Or so they thought, until they checked the rules - yes, 11 was the cap. Checking back, Swerve scored last, so HCUK took the game 11-10.

Curve v HCUK was another close game with HCUK taking an early 6-2 lead and then trading pairs of points up to the final whistle. Final score, 10-8.

In the Premiership things were a lot less tight - Angels and Lurve both winning their games with relative ease to set up a showdown for the final game.

In the Championship clash of the Clissold teams, Curve came out victors 11-8 over Swerve, but Swerve's win over PAF was enough to keep them above Curve in the overall League pisitions.

HCUK turned things around in the final event, and completed an impressive set of victories to take the Championship. Special mention to Steve Jones, who played all three HCUK games and picked up for UCL to complete their ironman team!

After the games the overall trophies were awarded. Gabor picked up the League trophy on behalf of Flame while in the Spirit stakes, Suzy picked up the award on behalf of Lurve.

Thanks to all the teams and captains for making it a great series of events. Hope you had fun.

Event 4 - Sunday 26 February 2006

And so, the penultimate event arrived. This time round we saw UCL join the fray - taking advantage of Playthings' withdrawal to enter straight into the top flight.

Lurve opened their Premiership account with a respectable four all draw against Angels, and continued to hold their own in the higher league, with their only loss to the unbeaten Flame.

You would be forgiven for thinking that Angels were playing the pools, with three score draws - their sole win coming against the shorthanded ABH. Still, they can take pride in their first undefeated Indoor League event and finally breaking Flame's perfect record with a 5-5 scoreline in the final match.

The story of the day came from the Championship though, with Thrown, the whipping boys from last Indoor League, turning it around to top the division and gain a deserved promotion.

The King's College students started off a little nervy, drawing with Swerve but shifted up a geat to take down Curve 4-2 and cruised through the rest of the day.

In the fight for second place, Curve took the honours, beating their arch-rivals Swerve. With only ten points between them going into the final event, there's still everything to play for.

So, Flame take the Premiership, ABH are relegated, while Thrown win the Championship and the right to play with the big boys - can't wait for the last one!

Event 3 - Sunday 29 January 2006

New year, new teams, new venue. The third London Indoor League saw us move down to Angels' home turf, Brixton. Two pitches for the same four hour slot meant an opportunity to expand the league and still have plenty of pitch time for everyone. Joining us this month were Thrown, our first student team, and Lurve, the pink-clad colleagues of Curve and Swerve (Fire aren't the only team in the capital with a massive squad).

The New Year didn't start quite the way we intended - when I arrived to set up, I found that the two halls were in a pretty bad state - tables and chairs still filling the place, and food and drink everywhere. With only ten minutes to go before the first game they admitted they were going to be an hour late. Thanks for the notice... Fortunately all the players were understanding - genuine thanks there!

One of the first games was newcomers Thrown against Swerve. Thrown started slowly, with Swerve racing to a four point lead. Thrown clawed their way back into contention, but Swerve held out taking the match 7-4. In the first pair of matches in the Premiership Flame and Playthings dominated, conceding just one or two points against Angels and ABH respectively.

Playthings continued to play well in their later games - after a narrow loss to Angels 10-7 they lost by a single goal against the unbeaten Flame.

The story in the Championship was the three-way battle between the Clissold crews - Curve, Swerve and Lurve. The first encounter saw Swerve take Curve 7-6, bravely defending their lead to the final whistle - including a pair of defensive score-saving layouts in the last minute. Curve recovered from their defeat to take Lurve 10-9. Lurve then managed to win 9-7 against Swerve leaving the final placings to goal difference - Lurve finished victorious on +1, Curve in second on evens and Swerve, in spite of their opening win, third on -1.

1st/2nd and 3rd/4th playoff games in the Premiership schedule meant that there was a repeat of the opening games - Flame vs Angels and Playthings vs ABH. Fortunately things were a lot closer this time, although the end result was the same - wins for Playthings, to leave them safe in the top flight and Flame, to keep their 100% record and emerge victors of the third event.

Finally, thanks to Fionn for doing a great job of scoring and timekeeping.

Event 2 - Sunday 27 November 2005

This Sunday saw the second of the London Indoor League events. Skip to the end if you just want to know the results, or read on for the full report...

The first game of the day saw one of the more important matches - Playthings, bidding to bounce straight back to the Premiership, against Curve, who narrowly missed promotion in the first event on goal difference. The teams traded points for most of the match, with Playthings eventually opening up a gap right at the end to take it 7-5.

The Premiership kicked off with Flame, last time's champions, against new faces to the Premiership, Swerve. Swerve got a painful taste of what it's like to play with big boys, eventually losing 11-2.

The best was left till last with Angels looking to square things up against Flame, the winners from the first event. Things started well for Angels, with them taking the first three goals on the trot. At three down Flame seemed to wake up, eventually holding out for a 5-4 win to finish top for the second event in a row.

So, Flame take the Premiership and Playthings the Championship. Next event takes place at the end of January - keep your eyes on these pages for updates.

Thanks again to Sukey for scoring.

Event 1 - Sunday 30 October 2005

8 teams met in the inaugural event to battle it out for London Indoors supremacy - split into two divisions, the Premiership and the Championship. Starting off the event were local kids, Curve, and Stevenage-based HCUK. A good game, but Curve pulled away to take it 6-4.

40 minutes later saw the start of the Premiership Division - ABH against Angels. ABH showed their lack of Indoor experience and seriously struggled, Angels bageling them with nine points.

They came alive in their next encounter against Flame, finally succumbing 6-4 after a brave fight, and erasing the poor showing against Angels from their minds.

With Swerve and Curve having won both their games in the Championship division, their final game saw them come head to head for the Championship title. At this point a little background might be in order - the similarly named teams are part of the Clissold Park collective of Ultimate players. They've decided to enter two equally matched teams, so this game was always going to be tight. Just how tight was surprising - they traded points throughout and the game finally finished 6-6, with Swerve being crowned champions with a +6 goal difference across all the games, a single point better than their sister team.

Flame were starting to come together as a team now, to Playthings' detriment. They tore through the Playthings zone, and nothing seemed to go the home team's way, with Flame coming out on top 11-1.

The penultimate game of the day was the Premiership third-fourth play off between ABH and Playthings. Both teams looked intent on finishing off the day well, with ABH starting off the better. Playthings made a late charge, but couldn't quite pull it off, ABH scraping to victory 7-6.

The showcase game of the day was Angels versus Flame - the two unbeaten teams from the Premiership. Angels - incredibly experienced Indoors, Flame - new as an Indoors team, but hugely experienced individually. The game started off with plenty of turnovers as both teams played hard D. Halfway through the match it was still just 1-1, but a few moments later, Flame took two points in a row to claim a 3-1 lead. Angels pushed hard, but never managed to recover those points and the game ended 5-3.

So Flame take the Premiership title, with Swerve coming through as Championship winners. In the next event I'm sure we'll see strong fights from Playthings, as they aim to get back into the top flight, and Angels as they set their sights on revenge against Flame.

Thanks to Sukey for doing a fantastic job of scoring and timekeeping.
